Our Planet is Drowning in Plastic Pollution

That’s roughly a dump truck every minute! Therefore, our oceans are being inundated with plastics, which eventually break down to become microplastics. The omnipresent yet vanishingly small menace are tainting even the deepest darkest depths of the world.

It is estimated that only 9% of the 8.3 billion tons of plastic ever produced has been recycled. In 2019 the amount recycled was around 20%, with 25% being burnt and the remaining 55% sent to landfill or dumped. But how much of this 20% was really recycled?

Unfortunately, a lot of plastic intended for recycling ends up in landfill mostly, because it is contaminated, often with food, meaning it cannot be made into new products. It is possible to clean the plastic and recycle it, but the high cost of the cleaning process means some waste handling facilities end up sending the plastic to landfill instead.

Even worse, some let it litter the countryside or oceans. This is a clear example of businesses prioritizing profits over the environment, which hopefully with greater awareness will change.

The tangled world of plastic recycling will be discussed much more in future posts.
