Ways to Practice Sustainable Living

We all know that climate change, global warming, depletion of the ozone layer, and resource depletion are real and their impact on human and animal lives can be devastating. Instead of being passive observers to what is happening around us, we can become actively involved and start engaging in sustainable living.

Sustainability is not just in trying to be eco-friendly superficially but is a way of consciously living life to reduce our damage to the environment, and in contributing to its revival.

Here are quick and easy ideas to live a sustainable life.

  1. Become a member of a community garden

We can grow our own food and turn the garden waste into organic fertilizers. Plants contribute to cleaner air by utilizing carbon dioxide to produce oxygen.

  1. Practice minimalism.

We must ensure that everything we own must be used to its maximum purpose, including waste materials, which we should recycle.

  1. Change the lights in your house.

By changing the lighting in our homes with Light Emitting Diode (LED) and Compact Fluorescent Light (CFL) bulbs, which have revolutionized energy-efficient lighting, we may be able to minimize our electricity usage. We should also take advantage of the natural light.

  1. Become more efficient in your errands.

Plan trips to supermarkets to save on fuel or opt to shop at the nearest stores within the neighborhood.

  1. Start using natural cleaners.

Use natural or homemade cleaners such as vinegar, baking soda, and citrus fruits. This will reduce the amount of packaging materials as well as the amount of chemicals thrown into the water system.

  1. Walk, bike or carpool to work.

Carpools will reduce pollution emitted by vehicles, and at the same time we will be able to gain friends. Walking or biking will also help improve our health.

  1. Spend more time reading and playing games.

This will reduce our reliance on entertainment forms requiring energy and natural resources.

  1. Try to get a more natural sleep schedule.

Aside from the health benefits, a more natural sleep schedule will reduce the amount of electricity that we consume when we stay up late at night.

  1. Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.

Curb the need to buy new products and try to reuse or repurpose items. Segregate waste and keep a recycle bin.

  1. Unplug devices when not in use.

Most electronic devices consume electricity even when turned off. It is best to unplug appliances when not in use. This will save energy and reduce electricity cost.

  1. Buy a right-sized house.

Just in case you are planning to buy a house, bear in mind that a smaller house is likely to consume less energy, compared to a bigger house. You may also utilize green home building ideas when constructing your new home.

  1. Use daylight as much as possible.

Take advantage of daylight by opening windows and curtains during the day.

  1. Stop unwanted mail.

Try to stop unwanted mail to save on paper and fuel in delivering them. For necessary mail, request the mailers to send online versions instead.

  1. Change your washing habits.

Practice taking short showers and recycle water used in laundry.

  1. Buy products with less packaging.

Buy products in bulk and with less packaging. Opt for products using bio-degradable packaging such as paper rather than plastic, which requires more time to disintegrate.
